Coach Explained: The Complete Guide to the Label in 2026

Only a handful of American fashion names are more familiar than Coach, and in 2026 its sales are growing at a strong pace. The brand first opened as a tiny leather workshop, turned into a handbag specialist and now sells clothing, shoes and accessories in stores around the world. The central idea behind the brand has barely changed for decades: quality leather goods that cost less than those of the traditional European luxury houses. As described by a federal court, that niche is accessible luxury, separate from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.

This guide explains how Coach began, who owns and manages it, the current size of the business and what it sells. It additionally clarifies how a full-price coach store differs from a coach outlet, which can easily cause confusion. Each number is dated to its source, whereas all prices reflect observed market prices, not an official price list.

From a Manhattan Leather Workshop to an American Icon

In 1941, a small family-run leather workshop was founded in Manhattan, the business to which Coach traces its roots. Six artisans based in a loft on 34th Street produced wallets, billfolds and coach denim bag other small leather goods for men, in Coach’s own telling. Both handbags and the Coach name followed later, and the name dates to about 1960 or 1961. Despite a recurring misconception, Miles and Lillian Cahn were not the original owners of the workshop.

By around 1950, Miles was running the factory, some years after joining the business alongside Lillian in 1946. They acquired the business from its original owners in 1961, taking charge of the business. Lillian Cahn is said to have suggested adding women’s handbags, a decision that redefined the company. Credit for glovetanned leather is given to Miles Cahn; it is a finish inspired by the way a worn baseball glove softens with use.

Bonnie Cashin and Coach

Bonnie Cashin, who became Coach’s first lead designer, is the designer most strongly associated with early Coach. Reportedly, she was engaged on a contract basis rather than as an employee, and she was never a co-founder. The year she started is slightly unclear, because Coach’s own pages cite both 1961 and 1962. What is clear is that she worked with Coach until 1974.

The designer introduced the brass turnlock closure in 1964, with Coach stating that the toggle on the top of her convertible was the inspiration. She is also recognized for side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors that freshened the brand’s look. To this day, the turnlock stands as one of the most distinctive Coach details, and it can be seen on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

From Sara Lee to Tapestry: A History of Owners and Listings

Sara Lee Corporation took over Coach in July 1985. In October 2000 Coach listed on the stock market, and the following year Sara Lee is reported to have fully exited. Rather than being a mid-century heritage motif, the “C” monogram arrived much more recently: Coach introduced its Signature collection with it in 2001. On 31 October 2017, Coach, Inc. became Tapestry, Inc., and its ticker symbol changed from COH to TPR.

The name change affected only the parent company; the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Coach, Inc. had bought Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry divested the shoe brand to Caleres in a deal that was completed on 4 August 2025. In 2026, Tapestry has only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, Coach being by far the more substantial of the two.

How the Capri Deal Never Closed

Tapestry revealed on 10 August 2023 that it had reached an agreement to purchase Capri Holdings, the group behind Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission opposed the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to halt it with a preliminary injunction. On 24 October 2024, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York granted that preliminary injunction. Although it was not a final ruling on the merits, the injunction barred the companies from closing for as long as the challenge went on.

In its decision, the court agreed that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, separate from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Arguing that the legal process was unlikely to finish before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024. The takeover was never finalized, which means Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo do not belong to Tapestry.

Who Is in Charge at Coach Today

At the parent company, Tapestry, the chief executive is Joanne Crevoiserat. Todd Kahn runs the brand itself as Coach’s CEO and brand president, a job he first held on an interim basis in July 2020 and held permanently from April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was announced in June 2013.

Vevers reportedly showed his first Coach collection in February 2014, and he continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026. Reportedly, he spent time at Mulberry and then served as creative director at Loewe before joining Coach. Older designs have been reissued and vintage shapes recast into new bags such as the Tabby, as Coach has leaned on its archive under his direction. The Cunard Building, in New York, hosted the show of his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.

Coach in Figures

The clearest view of Coach’s scale comes from Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ending 27 June 2026. The whole of Tapestry recorded $8,004.2 million, with Coach’s net sales making up $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year. In other words, Coach generated around 86% of group sales.

By the close of that fiscal year, Coach counted 973 directly run stores, including 336 in North America and 637 internationally. The separate figure of about 1,299 stores counts every Tapestry store and not Coach alone. Tapestry also said the average unit retail price of Coach handbags climbed at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. The company has linked that rise partly to reduced promotional activity.

Bags, Clothes and Shoes: What Coach Sells

Structured icons are paired with soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, as handbags remain the heart of the business. The Tabby launched in 2019 on a 1970s archive shape, the Rogue made its debut in 2016 and returned in 2021, and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, launched in August 2024. Having debuted on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall reached shoppers in February 2025. At the upper end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was spotted at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, but the Kisslock Frame Bag, reported as the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. The Coach Originals line revives archive designs as newly made bags, so those pieces are not vintage.

Leather varsity jackets and leather-and-wool versions, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats all appeared in coach clothing for Fall 2026, a sign that ready-to-wear is now a substantial part of the offer. Flared trousers, blazers and A-line skirts also appeared in the same show, as did floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. For footwear, the offer includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, while fashion press noted loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Coachtopia, which launched on 20 April 2023 as a circular-design sub-brand, is run by Coach alongside Coach (Re)Loved, a 2021 launch said to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces.

Coach Boutique, Coach Outlet or Online: Where to Buy

A full-price coach store carries the current collections, and the biggest flagships carry the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly launched in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as slated for 2027. British department stores Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis carry the brand in the UK, while London’s Coach House on Regent Street opened in 2016 as well. To see the latest season, the full-price range is where to go, be it a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket.

Coach Outlet is Coach’s own official outlet channel, comprising outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. Coach’s head of investor relations, quoted in 2014, placed the share of outlet merchandise made for the outlet channel at around 85%, yet that figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since discussed bringing some full-price product into outlets. Saying that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, goes beyond the public evidence. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet all have UK outlet stores. As a search for the brand may be typed as “couch” or “cosch”, confirm that any site promising big discounts is truly Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
